Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and the Promenade Le Corbusier
Roquebrune-Cap-Martin is in France, just east of Monaco, with no border checks. It has a coastal path round Cap Martin, a medieval village high on the hill, and two train stations a few minutes from Monaco.
Getting there
Trains between Nice and Menton stop at two stations: Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, by the sea at the start of the coastal path, and Carnolès, near the beaches at the other end. Both are a few minutes from Monaco Monte-Carlo station.
The Promenade Le Corbusier
A coastal path of about 4.7 km round Cap Martin, from Roquebrune-Cap-Martin station to the seafront at Carnolès. Allow about an hour and a quarter.
- Cap Moderne. Le Corbusier’s Cabanon and Eileen Gray’s Villa E-1027 sit right beside the path. Visits are guided only and must be booked ahead.
- Round the cape. The path hugs the rocks, among pines and villas, with views back to Monaco.
- Empress Elisabeth monument. A monument to Empress Elisabeth of Austria, “Sissi”, who loved to stay on Cap Martin.
- Carnolès. Beaches and cafés to finish, and Carnolès station about 10 minutes inland.
The path is right by the sea, with uneven ground and some steps, so it isn’t suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. It can be closed when the sea is rough. Wear good shoes and take water.
The old village and castle
The medieval village of Roquebrune sits high on the hill, around a castle first built over a thousand years ago. Its lanes are steep and stepped, and there are no public lifts, so allow time for the climb. Nearby is an olive tree said to be well over a thousand years old.
Monaco taxis can’t collect you in France. In Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, book a French taxi or try Uber or Bolt.
In the app, the walk comes with a map of the route, directions between the stops, and the step count for each part. It’s part of Monaco Made Easy Pro. The guide also lists Roquebrune’s restaurants, sights, toilets and cash machines.
